Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was the first Japanese artist to be internationally recognized, and he continues to inspire artists around the world. As the home of the largest and finest collection of Japanese art outside Japan—including the greatest variety of Hokusai works in any museum—the MFA is uniquely positioned to offer a comprehensive exhibition of this remarkable artist. Celebrate the opening of "Hokusai" along with "In the Wake: Japanese Photographers Respond to 3/11," an exhibition of contemporary Japanese photography recording and responding to the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster of March 11, 2011. Hear remarks by Sarah E. Thompson, assistant curator for Japanese Prints, and Anne Nishimura Morse, William and Helen Pounds Senior Curator of Japanese Art.
